VNU Spring2009 - Day 10

Day
#10 - To the Finish Line & Beyond! It's hard to believe that this course is almost finished. I want to thank all of you for hard work and determination. One of my favorite parts of being an educator is the opportunity it offers for lifelong learning and as usual, I have learned a lot from teaching this course. Not only have I learned about some new CALL tools and resources, but I have learned more about how to teach in this kind of online environment. It has truly been a pleasure to work with such a dedicated group of fellow educators.
Todays Agenda
- Odds & Ends
- Conferences with Jeff.
- Work on Assignments
If you don't do so, I will be unable to email you.
Click My Account/Edit/and type your email address as shown here:
Odds & Ends
- You have until March 22 to complete your work. When I assess your work
for this course, I go to this page: http://www.efl537.com/complete_content
, select your ID, and click 'submit'. This allows me to see
everything you've created on this site. I also will check your
profile page (e.g. http://www.efl537.com/users/vnu1
) and look at the sites you have listed there (Delicious,
Slideshare, Posterous, etc.). I have added a place to include
your Esnips.com address, so if you've created and Esnips account,
please add it there. Please check your profile page to make sure
all of the sites are listed there and that the links work.
- Materials Archive
- If you have an Esnips account and a fast enough connection,
upload all of your saved materials there. If not, that's OK.
Create a blog post on EFL537.com and attach screenshots of each
sub-folder in your Materials Archive
- CALL Plan Report (the
final required Assignment) - Basically, I want you to summarize what
you've learned during this course and how you might apply it to your
teaching. The 'EFL537 page' on your personal website can serve
this purpose as long as it's a complete enough summary.
Please be as specific and comprehensive as possible and
include links to the resources you mention.
For example:
Not so good: I learned about social bookmarking. It's good. I'll use it to bookmark sites.
Better: I learned about social bookmarking by using Delicious.com. My account is at: http://delicous.com/jefflebow . This is very useful because I can access my bookmarked sites from any computer I use. By tagging the the bookmarks properly I am able to organize my bookmarks in a way that makes it easy to find what I'm looking for. Because I can see bookmarks that other people have saved, Delicious helps me discover other sites I might be interested in. For example, I can go to http://delicious.com/tag/efl+listening to find the latest EFL Listening sites that people have bookmarked. I plan to continue using Delicious to bookmark sites of professional and personal interest. If we get internet access in the classroom, I will also encourage my students to use to delicious, so bookmark sites related to our studies.
If you learned about something, but don't think you'll use it, feel free to say so.
- Copyright & Privacy
- This is one of the many topics we did not have time to cover during
this course. I just wanted to remind people that everything they've
published on Posterous, Esnips, Slideshare and other sites is
visible by everyone. If there's anything you don't want to make
public, most sites have settings that let you make something private.
Also, most sites have rules that may result in your account being
closed if you upload copyrighted material that does not belong to your
(like pop songs). You can find links to lots of copyright
friendly music here, and learn more about copyright issues here
and here.
- Life after EFL537 - As we've mentioned, this course is just a beginning, not an end. If you have CALL related questions after the course, feel free to continue posting them in the How Do I forum. I check it regularly between sessions, although not quite as often as when a course is in session. Feel free to also make use of any of resources posted there
Conferences with Jeff. - I just want to make sure each of you has a chance to speak with me one-on-one about your work. I will do my best to answer any questions you have or discussion anything related to the course or CALL in general. I'd like to begin the conferences by 9:30am and i think it would be easiest to use the same computer for all students (with a headset, not connected to the classroom speaker).
The rest of class time can be spent working on assignments
