For a language teacher, computers could be an assistant and a teaching tool, I think. So as a language learner, the computers play a role as a helper during the study. Computers make the language learning visual and audial. It's good for me, because I am not a very logical person who can learn a foreign language very well from texts.

Frankly speaking, in my L2- English, I didn't use too many computer assistances. When I was training my listening and speaking, I watched TV and listened to radio everyday. These ways are the most convenient and cheapest. I don't worry about my equipments are slowly and my softwares are too old. Mabye my education background belongs to traditional style and my learning environment is old fasion. Similarly, both TV and computer can provide "visual and audio learning environment." Actually, I can't deny computer is a good assistant. I just consider about "economical benefit."

Computers in my language learning

I learned my L1 and my L2 before the computer age. French is my L2. When I studied French in college we had to spend some time in the language lab at the library. This was a place where a student would listen to recorded language and perform certain tasks related to comprehension and pronunciation. I believe there was a main-frame computer involved in managing the recordings for multiple student users.

Computers and my language learning

Computers didn't play a role at all in my L1 learning. When I began to learn Spanish in high school I still don't think computers played a very big role in my language learning. I can remember doing some drills on the computer but I don't feel that it really helped me in any way.

Not about the technology

Your last sentence reminded me of an important aspect of CALL and Educational Technology in general - it's not about the technology, it's about the learning it facilitates. Just because we can do something 'cool' with technology, doesn't mean we should. The educational value needs to be worth the effort. I'll try to keep that in mind as we play with all of out 'cool' tech toys this term.
