Blogging & RSS

EFL teachers from around the world share a lot of useful ideas and resources on their blogs.  They also have great conversations with one another in the comment section of their blogs. One of the advantages of using blogs instead of old style web sites is that when you find a blog you like, you don't have to visit it every time you want to see if something new has been published.  Instead, you can 'subscribe' to that blog using an RSS Reader.  Your google account includes this kind of tool (called Google Reader). Today where going to try to use it to subscribe to blogs of interest.

Task: (remember this is an optional assignment - do as much as you want, but don't worry about completing the task if you don't have time.  You can always come back after the course and continue)
Try to use Google Reader to subscribe to at least three blogs.
To subscribe to a blog using Google Reader
  • Login to your Gmail account.  Go to http://www.google.com/reader/ and you'll see your empty reader.
  • Next, use the list below to find blogs you're interested in subscribing to and find the subscribe link. It might look like some of these

  • Click on that link.  You might see a number of images.  If you see one that looks like this
     click it.
  • After that, or if you don't see that, you should see a screen that looks like this:
  • Click on 'Add to Google Reader'.
  • If that doesn't work, you can always copy the link location of the RSS feed by RIGHT clicking and selecting 'copy link location'

and then in your Google Reader, click 'Add Subscription' and paste the URL of that blog feed.
  • That blog should then be added to your google reader at http://www.google.com/reader/
Any updates to that blog will now appear on your reader page.
  • If you'd like to show me your reader, take a screenshot using Irfanview and post it to your Posterous. You can see an example on Jeff's Posterous here

Here are some EFL Related blogs and blog lists.  You don't have to look at that all!  Find some names that seem interesting and check them out. If they're boring, move on.
